Welcome to Eastern Kentucky University and the Emergency Medical Care program. The program is housed in the Stratton Building on the EKU campus in Richmond, KY. You are in the portal or beginning for the EMC degree completion program. You will hear about the program and some of the documents and information you will need as you move through your curriculum.

The history of a university and program can be not only interesting but a way to provide the student with a sense of pride in your education. The EMC program began at EKU in 1976 and graduated the first paramedic class with an associate degree in 1978. The program moved from the college of Health Sciences to the college of Justice and Safety in 1998 and is now part of the Department of Fire Protection and Paramedicine Sciences.

The program is accredited through CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) and is accredited specifically by a branch of CAAHEP called Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions. EKU was the first university to become accredited in Kentucky and is the second accredited program in the U.S. We are one of 13 universities that offer a Bachelor of Science degree. .

The specific program that you are enrolled in is called the EMC Degree Completion Program. This provides current paramedics with either an associate or bachelor degree. At this time, we are offering the Administrative Option for the Bachelor of Science degree. I hope that this answers some of your questions about EKU and the EMC degree completion program.
